What is Pilates
|
 |
Pilates is a body-mind practice of physical conditioning which
embraces both Eastern and Western philosophies of fitness. Joseph H. Pilates
was born in Germany in 1880 and came to the United States in the 1950’s
where he opened his studio in New York City and gained great acclaim with
dancers and those involved in the entertainment industry.
Pilates is a precision oriented form of exercise, engaging both body
and mind. It will build a strong, lean and supple physique. Pilates
uses a repertoire of over five hundred exercises to strengthen your core and
your entire body. It will restore you physically and emotionally and creates
a sense of well-being. You will stand taller, feel more balanced and in
control of your body. It will enhance your awareness of your body; improve
coordination, posture and overall body alignment. In so doing, it will also
aid in injury rehabilitation and prevention and in the prevention of
osteoporosis.
Pilates is a practice that requires concentration and singular focus.
It is not a weight loss or cardiovascular exercise program per se, though it
can offer those benefits once you advance in ability through your routine of
exercises. Pilates is a commitment to yourself—and to your body. |
